UAE tightens law on sexual offences, prostitution

What UAE changed in the law:

The UAE government issued a new Federal Decree-Law to make penalties much stricter for sexual crimes involving minors and for offenses related to prostitution and debauchery.

An adult (18+) who has sex with someone under 18 now faces at least 10 years in prison and a minimum fine of AED 100,000, even if the younger person agreed.

“Consent” is legally recognized only if the other person is at least 16 years old.

Stricter prison terms and fines apply to anyone who incites, solicits or entices others into debauchery or prostitution. The punishment increases further if the victim is a minor.

Other legal enhancements:

The law allows courts to order medical, psychological, and social evaluations for offenders nearing the end of their sentences to assess risk and behavior.

🏛 Why this matters

The changes reflect the UAE government’s priority to:

✔️ Protect minors and vulnerable people from exploitation and abuse.

✔ Strengthen the legal system with stronger deterrents and enforcement powers.

🔎 Additional Context

These updates are part of a broader effort by the UAE to modernize its laws and ensure community safety, alongside other legal changes such as stricter penalties for drug offenses and residency violations in recent days.
